Orlando Pirates central midfield star Benson Mhlongo has set his sights on putting one against his former team Mamelodi Sundowns, when the Sea Robbers host the Brazilians at the Coca-Cola Park tonight.

“I am really looking forward to the game tonight to face my former team-mates,” said Mhlongo.

“It’s always exciting to play against big teams of Mamelodi Sundowns calibre. As a player, you want to do your best and help your team come out on top at the end of the match.

He added: “It’s going to be a crunch match for both teams, but something tells me that we have a good chance of upsetting our visitors. We played to goalless draw in the first round, and I still remember that I had a chance to score against them, but I messed up.

“However, should I get another opportunity to score tonight – I will definitely put the ball in the back of the net. Having said that, I must declare that my highest priority is to help my team to victory, anything else will just be a bonus.

“I have enjoyed my stay at Sundowns and made friends in the team, but that relationship will be suspended for the entire 90 minutes,” said the no-nonsense midfielder.

Keeping the ship sailing

There is no doubt that the 28-year-old stalwart has been the missing link in the heart of Rudolf Krol’s midfield, as he has already helped the club collect six points in the past two matches since his return to action in the 1-0 victory over Free State Stars, and then followed by a 2-1 execution of Platinum Stars over the weekend.

“I’ve really enjoyed my return to the team. What makes my return even sweeter is the two successive victories we registered during that period. The results definitely boosted my confidence and encouraged me to work even harder in the next coming games.

Nevertheless, I must bear out that it all boils down to teamwork and hunger for success from the players. That’s why we are willing to keep the ship sailing until to the final hurdle,” he concluded.
